Social Media boosts employee productivity

You probably read the headline and thought to yourself, “No way, not with the amount of time my employees waste on Facebook”. But that’s not the kind of social media usage that a recent report by McKinsey investigated.

What was under scrutiny was how social technology could be applied to communication within businesses to facilitate collaboration – and the results are positive! By making your internal communications more social, your business can improve the efficiency of its employees (especially if they are knowledge workers) by up to 30%.

Here’s what MGI’s Michael Chui has to say about the findings:

McKinsey looked at hundreds of case studies and extrapolated the findings onto the wider industry, estimating potential product development improvements worth $350bn. In fact, 2/3 of the value social media is unlocking will come from improving collaboration within the entreprise, as opposed to simply using it on a personal level.

Some of the main benefits of internal enterprise social networks are:

  1. the breaking up of communication silos,
  2. making content searchable and;
  3. facilitating the sharing of expertise.
